5 Key Skills to Grow Your Network as an Entrepreneur

Networking is an essential and important component of the business world. However, as necessary as it may be, business people tend to dread the inevitable task. More often than not, it is because they don’t necessarily find much success throughout the arduous process.

Surprisingly, much of the secret to networking success lies not in how successful your business is, rather, it is in the personal and character-driven skill sets and qualities of the business person or entrepreneur.

If you struggle with networking, or you’re looking to improve upon your already impressive networking skills, here are the 5 essential personal skills you need to make a lasting, positive impression:

1. Be Authentic and Genuine

Sure, being authentic and genuine isn’t necessarily a ‘skill set’ you can just acquire. There are different practices and habits you can adopt which will paint you as a more earnest and reliable business person. The best thing about adopting these practices is that it’s easy. It only requires a little bit of mindfulness and diligence.

Authenticity and being genuine start at the simplest levels. For example, when meeting a new business contact, don’t jump right into business talk. Talk to them as a person first, rather than someone you can benefit from knowing. In the end, treating someone like a friend rather than an advantageous contact will make them more likely to help and guide you.

Moreover, being genuine is typically something people can sense. Typically in the business world, people get caught up in the work aspect of things and the ‘dog-eat-dog-world’ mentality.

While you should be looking out for your business and its success, this doesn’t mean you should walk over other people to get there. Character and management styles communicate a lot about a person, and this could turn away contacts if you’re too cutthroat.

Finally, in being authentic and genuine, be mindful of people who maybe can’t provide you with the same opportunities you can provide them. Don’t treat these people any less than the contacts that can give you plenty of opportunities.

How you treat those who can logistically ‘do nothing’ for you is just as important as how you treat the CEO of a major corporation. This is a key component of having an authentic and likeable character when networking.

2. Make it a Two-way Street

Networking is never about one person making out better than the other party. It takes a joint effort to create a mutually beneficial and lasting business relationship. Typically, selfish people don’t create business contacts because they’re only looking to gain for themselves. The best way to nurture networking relationships is to offer something beneficial to the other party.

Based on the Robert B. Cialdini’s “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion,” the principle of reciprocation instinctively kicks in and compels us to return the favor. Essentially, you will get more out of networking relationships when you offer up an attractive service, favor, product, or deal to the other party because, generally, they will feel compelled to return the favor.

“The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity.” – Keith Ferrazzi

3. Be Easy to Teach

As an entrepreneur, you’ve probably overcome a handful of trials and tribulations. It’s no secret that to be an entrepreneur you have to be cunning, clever, relentless, dedicated, and driven.

Generally, entrepreneurs get a lot of credit, but it’s important not to let this get to your head. One important aspect of networking is not only the opportunities available presented to you, but also any lessons or words of wisdom the person offers.

Being easy to teach makes these business contacts more likely to share their experiences with you, what works, what doesn’t, and how to handle different situations. Not only are you encouraging and empowering the person giving you the advice, but you’re also taking in new perspectives and ideas to help you and your business. It’s a win-win situation for both parties.

Moreover, people are more likely to connect with and help people that listen intently and recognize the validity and value of other people’s viewpoints. Receive the advice and ideas contacts give you with an open mind, and you’ll be sure to make a lasting positive impression.

4. Stay in Touch

While staying in touch isn’t necessarily a personality or character trait, it’s extremely important. Business relationships are just like any other relationship: they require constant effort, following up, and reciprocation. Very often, people exchange business cards without ever following back up. Even if the contact isn’t necessarily relevant to your business, you exchanged cards for a reason.

Essentially, you never know who they may know or what advice they may have to help you in your business endeavors. It may seem like a tedious task, but following up and staying in touch with new and old network contacts is one of the most important parts of developing and fostering healthy, beneficial business relationships.

“Success isn’t about how much money you make; it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” – Michelle Obama

5. Show your Appreciation and Gratitude

Even though networking is pretty much a universal endeavor, it never hurts to express your appreciation and gratitude to the contact you made. By simply sending a ‘thank you’ email, or better yet a ‘thank you’ card, you’re sure to gain major brownie points with the contacts in your network.

This is because gratitude and appreciation are hard to come by. Even if the act was as simple as exchanging business cards or taking time to have a coffee, you should thank the other party. Not only does it bode well for your character, but it also shows that you respect and value their time, opinions, and any help or advice they may offer.

This should also be kept in mind for contacts you have had for a while. Even if the relationship gets comfortable, it’s still important to thank them every now and again. This helps ensure that the relationship is still appreciated and valued and that neither party is taking the other for granted. By showing your appreciation, people are then more likely to continue to help you. It also might help you be more grateful overall in your day-to-day life!

Networking can seem like a daunting task however, if you go into it with genuine and mindful intentions, you could wind up meeting some fascinating people, developing long-lasting business relationships, and advancing the interests of you and your business.

Often times, formal institutions and coaching focuses on the technical aspects of networking: how to shake a hand, how to deliver an elevator pitch, what to wear, and how to speak. All these aspects are important, but they can come off rather robotic. The key to successful networking lies in the personality and genuineness of your character.

At the end of the day, if you are shallow and selfish with your interests when networking, you’ll have a much harder time developing lasting, beneficial relationships. Being mindful and down-to-earth should be the main thing in mind when embarking on networking efforts.

3 Inspiring Lessons We Can Learn From Jim Carrey About the Law of Attraction

You’ve more than likely heard of Jim Carrey before. Over the years, he has starred in many popular films including The Truman Show, The Mask, and Bruce Almighty (just to name a few.)

But his personality goes a lot deeper than just his comedic persona and movie star charisma. In fact, Jim Carrey is probably one of the most philosophical individuals on the planet!

Although he isn’t in the spotlight as much anymore, throughout the years, he has credited his success and fortunes by applying the Law of attraction into his life. What’s even more inspiring is that Jim Carrey, like you and I, came from humble beginnings. No silver spoon or easy ticket. In fact, his family was very poor throughout his childhood. So what made him so successful in attracting such an extravagant and self-fulfilling life?

Here are 3 lessons you can learn from Jim Carrey when it comes to manifesting your dreams into a reality:

1. You Have To Take Action

“You can’t just visualize then go eat a sandwich”, Jim Carrey says. It goes without saying that the law of attraction does require action. You cannot simply rely on visualizing and expect to see results, especially when it comes to manifesting desires that other people would like to achieve also. E.g. Careers, scholarships, competitions, anything that involves another individual.

Visualization and positive thinking are crucial when it comes to using the law of attraction, but you have to meet the universe halfway with the steps you take as well. We are physical beings that require physical steps to get physical results. The real key is to make daily plans/goals in order to get you closer towards achieving your desires. So after that sandwich, make sure start taking action toward your dreams!

This could be working on your hobbies or passion, applying for that dream job or studying to get better grades. As long as you are moving toward your goals then there’s no reason why it can’t happen. So get out there and kick some butt.

2. Double Down On What You Love

“My father could have been a great comedian but he didn’t believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant and when I was 12 years old he was let go from that safe job, and our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father. Not the least of which was that: You can fail at what you don’t want. So you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

If this story of Jim Carrey’s father doesn’t pull on your heartstrings and inspire you at the same time, nothing else will! This is such an undeniable life lesson that everyone needs to learn. A lesson to take risks, push comfort zones and go all-in on what you love doing. So if your dreams, hobbies or goals seem far fetched to the majority, then you are already beating the other 99%.

Be that 1% that’s willing to dream big and rise above the norm. Unfortunately, in today’s society, our ancestral instincts still rule our everyday life. Fear is one of them and controls the majority of our population. It’s scary to push comfort zones and try something new, the thought of failure is often paralyzing to many. But my question to you is, will you look back one day and regret the chances you didn’t take?

3. Keep Your Eye On The Prize

“As far as I can tell, it’s just about letting the universe know what you want and working toward it, while letting go of how it comes to pass.” Holding onto every little detail when it comes to manifesting, can conjure up more harm than good. The reason is that the universe will deliver in ways you might not expect.

If you are too busy wondering when your desires will manifest, comparing yourself to others, or ignoring every sign that doesn’t look like your detailed plan you’ve written down, then you may be missing out on opportunities that are right in front of you! Your visualizations don’t have to be perfect, in fact, it’s better to just let go altogether and focus on the result itself rather than dwelling on every little detail. This doesn’t mean to simply forget about what you want but instead having the confidence it will happen in time.

An example of this is when Jim Carrey wrote himself a check for 30 million dollars. The only detail he knew was that he would earn it through his acting career, and he did indeed achieve this goal! So make sure to tell the universe what you want, but try not to hold onto every little detail!

Jim Carrey is just another person like you and me, with his own personal ups and downs in his road to success. He is someone to look up to when applying the law of attraction in your life too. It doesn’t matter if your goals or desires are different because the core foundation will always stay the same. You can and will do this if you think, feel and act as if it will happen!

6 Steps to Changing Your Scarcity Mindset

Having a scarcity mindset means fearing you’ll lose your source of income, shying away from taking risks, and believing there’s a set amount of success in the world. Its counterpart, an abundance mindset, believes that there’s opportunity for growth, risks are worth taking, and when we win, we all win together. To succeed in business, you need to adopt an abundance mindset. But how do you change your perspective?

Here are 6 ways you can change your perspective immediately:

1. Decide You Want to Change

The first step in changing your scarcity mindset is to acknowledge who you are and decide that you want to change. I compare it to the time twenty years ago when I decided to quit smoking.

Smoking is clearly stupid, but back then it was widely accepted. Still, that’s not an excuse. The first thing I did was admit that I was addicted. The second step was making the commitment to quit. I had to decide that I didn’t want anything to have control over me anymore.

Those who want to change their scarcity mindset have to do the same thing. You may have to break your goals down into doable chunks, but you also have to keep your oars in the water. You have to keep rowing, put your back into it, and look for better opportunities.

One of the hardest challenges will be changing how you view the ideas of others. You can’t think of those ideas as a threat, or the people as a threat. Don’t worry so much about personal success as you do about the success of the group. Remember the adage: there are three ways to do things—my way, your way, and a better way.

This notion of abundance goes beyond wealth. That’s part of it, of course, but embracing the idea of abundance means you want to experience more. You want to help more people. You want to have a greater impact on your family and your community. You have to acknowledge that you’re tired of worrying about your car breaking down and reassure yourself that if it does break down, you’ll find a way to fix it or get a new one. If you decide to buy a new car, donate your old one to the humane society so they can help animals. That’s abundance.

“Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” – Jim Rohn

2. Stay on Your Path

If you’re an entrepreneur starting a business, you probably already have an abundance mindset. That’s excellent. But you still need to keep working on your idea, regardless of the failures or setbacks you encounter. Just because you’re optimistic about your future doesn’t mean you don’t have to work hard and swim against the tide from time to time.

3. Talk about the Obstacles You’ll Face

Having an abundance mindset doesn’t mean you blithely glide over every hurdle. You won’t. Instead, you have to anticipate potential problems and start plotting how you’ll get past them. If you’re confident and optimistic, the answers come more quickly and in greater numbers, thus improving your chances of success. You can’t assume your business idea is going to be a mega-hit right from the start, and that you’ll make tons of money. That might happen, but chances are you’ll have to work long and hard hours first.

4. Develop Good Habits

It’s vital that you set strong goals and adopt the habits that will help you reach those goals. Networking is key to learning and to building contacts and community. It’s not just about the help you can receive, but the help you can give. Find ways to appreciate the uniqueness of others, whether you’re working with them or having a cocktail at the local pub.

“I have learned that champions aren’t just born; champions can be made when they embrace and commit to life-changing positive habits.” – Lewis Howes

5. Address One Problem at a Time

Starting a new business is often daunting. You may have a dream of what you want to accomplish, but the task in front of you seems overwhelming. Where do you start?

I like the approach Desmond Tutu once advocated. He said “There is only one way to eat an elephant, [and that’s] one bite at a time.” What this means is that the bigger the endeavor, the more crucial it is that you break up the challenge into smaller pieces. The problems seem less intimidating and more doable when you look at them in smaller, discrete portions.

It’s not unusual for people to freeze up or get discouraged when faced with a big, hairy task, so in addition to the wisdom of Desmond Tutu, it also helps to keep in mind this observation by Mark Twain: “The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” It’s much easier to make progress in your big goal when you chip away at the challenges.

6. Don’t Kick the Can

It may be tempting to put off work on a particularly gnarly problem or to delay a decision on something until you have more information, but be forewarned: you can only kick the can down the road so many times before it becomes the size of a fifty-gallon drum. When that happens, procrastination is no longer an option.

Instead, just make a decision. Whether it’s the right decision or the wrong one, at least you did something. If it turns out to be the wrong decision, at least now you know what not to do, and you’re halfway there. You’ll learn and you’ll be able to adjust. You miss those opportunities when you put off making a move.

Once you have an abundance mindset, the possibilities open to you will seem endless.

How Trolls Can Raise Your Self-Esteem and Business Game

Everybody knows that the virtual world is full of trolls. They’re negative, they’re angry and they’re probably a bit smelly too. Like sketchy neighbourhoods and dodgy-looking characters on the street, we take great steps to avoid potentially negative interactions in our everyday life online. But, what if I told you, that there is a different path open to you, when it comes to dealing with trolling? That trolls, nay-sayers, angry folks that want to insult you, and all-round impolite and insulting creatures online, are actually a force that you can leverage, for your own self-esteem, and for your business? Would you tell me that I’m crazy?

Why We Are Affected By Trolls

Most of us are lucky enough to live in a world, where our safety and self-esteem is not immediately threatened every day. There are no tigers waiting to eat us, no armed gangs gathering outside our homes, and we can safely call a taxi to get home on a night out. While this is ideal from the point of view of safety, it means that our deep reflexes – our natural instincts in the face of danger, don’t get a look in. In fact, those deep-rooted survival instincts are positively flabby. We don’t get enough practise dealing with conflict, so when it does happen, we go all wibbly-wobbly about it.

This is why, when we write a kick-ass article, post a picture or share an achievement online, we forget all about the uplifting comments from people that enjoyed it, in order to mentally and often physically, over-react to negative comments.

Even though we’re not in any physical danger, and we’re probably not in any other type of danger either, such as having our livelihood stripped away from us, or losing money. We react as though we are. Negative comments naturally dominate our thoughts, as the brain and body are attuned to threats and danger. That’s how we’ve survived for many thousands of years.

Being rejected by your tribe is an ancient danger. Shame has been used by humans to control other humans since forever, and this primitive reaction is what trolls are tapping in to. When your social standing and reputation are threatened, the primitive part of your brain doesn’t understand that it’s probably some dude covered in Pringle crumbs, sitting in his mother’s basement ten thousand miles away.

When the brain perceives danger, or a threat to your plans or social standing, a chemical called cortisol is released by the HPA axis in the brain. This heightens your awareness (which is partly why some people obsess over certain comments online). It raises your heartbeat, your breathing gets shallower, and you might even start to tremble. You can have trouble focusing on anything other than the perceived threat, and even experience distortion of reality – such as thinking that your article is terrible and everyone hates it.

I don’t need to tell you, that this feels HORRIBLE! This is how trolls operate, and they get a kick out of causing a physical and mental reaction to somebody, just by using words.

How Trolls Can Be Good For You

First of all, if you can be at peace with the fact that trolling exists, and some of it is going to land at your feet, no matter how wonderful you are, then you have a huge advantage over lots of other people that want to get their work out there.

Being aware of the entire process of trolling, from what causes it in the first place to how it makes you react, helps to hand the power over the whole process back to you. People feeling powerless and trying to dominate and control others over the Internet because they’re feeling sad and inadequate in themselves – that’s the reason trolls say awful stuff. Your natural response – to over-react and feel like crap about it, is perfectly healthy.

This stuff is as natural as anything you’d see on a David Attenborough show. That doesn’t mean it’s OK, but if you can change your outlook on trolling, you can retain your power and actually use their negativity as motivation to hit your next level, where their comments can not harm you.

Being Trolled Is An Opportunity To Become More Of Who You Are

If you can concentrate on your own feelings and reactions to trolling and begin to control them, instead of letting them control you, then YOU get to use it as an opportunity for growth. You get to be the badass. You get to build the courage to post the stuff you might otherwise delete. You get to go deeper, be more experimental, and dare to connect more deeply with your audience. You get to be more authentic, more real, and come across in 3D, which puts you at an advantage, compared to everyone else that’s still getting hung up on rude people who get off on upsetting strangers.

Trolls Can Help You to Build Deeper Connections With the RIGHT People

Going even deeper – if you can control your own reactions to trolls, you can step in and uplift others. What better way to connect with other writers, entrepreneurs, or the artists and people you admire, than to counter their negativity THEY are receiving from trolls, with your admiration and acclaim?

This is going to bring you far more happiness and make you more positive connections, than thinking “I’d better tone myself down a bit in case I get a load of crap from trolls over this.” Standing up for yourself can repair the cracks that trolls may have caused in your self-esteem, but standing up for others gives you battle-armour.

You can’t wave a magic wand and banish all the trolls back to their bridges, but you can use their negativity to push yourself further, be more daring, and make all kinds of connections online. I’m sure many of you will agree, that is truly a win against the online forces of darkness.

The 3 Foundations of Success and How They Can Work for You

Success comes so easily, when you know how to get it. For so long, I placed ultimate value in what my teachers at school taught me. Learn all these subjects, fit in, be the same as everyone else, and then you will succeed in life. It never rang true with me, I never felt I fit in, and the nightmare of being bullied on a daily basis did little to help. I never felt that school was a good place for me, I was bored and saw little value in what many teachers said. There were a few that inspired me, though they were the ones who were supportive of being myself, and following my beliefs in life.

As life flowed further on, with various challenges, dreams coming and going, some being shredded with various life events, others being surpassed in an incredible way. All of which raised my level of intrigue with how I could achieve successful results in such incredible ways, yet fail so spectacularly in others. Where was the sense in all this success, or lack of it? How could I ensure that I actually achieved success on a regular basis? And really achieve consistent results in the way I wanted.

Below, are the 3 foundations of success that I have learned over the years:

1. The Secret Power Unleashed From Being Yourself

One of the key points I realized, after a huge amount of soul searching and correlating a few things from different courses, was about being me. This flew in the face of what so many had told me growing up. While fitting in can be good at times, if you are dramatically turning your back on who you are, you are also turning your back on your strengths, your inner power, and the diversity which is you within the world and will lead to your achievement of success.

Fitting in can help bring harmony. Though when you are being your real self, you are happier. That happiness leads to greater feelings of fulfillment which in turn, yield the fertile grounds from which the fruits of success and achievement of desired results spring forth. The twist on this, is that when you’re truly in your element like this, feeling happy and fulfilled, your vibration is such that you naturally attract other people who want to be around you.

Ergo, you never have to change who you are to fit in, because you naturally attract the circumstances to you, which fit you. Being your true self, your authentic self, brings success with far greater ease than if you are changing who you are to blend in with others.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

2. Letting Go Of Life Luggage Keeping Your Energy Productive

One of the other huge things that blocks people from achieving success in the way they want is dragging the past into the present…or even projecting it off into the future. So many people allow negative emotions and beliefs to block situations which they have zero relation to. Old stuff from childhood, which ceased to be relevant, comes through and blocks success with business deals and relationships, when it really has zero relevance, or reason to be there.

Most people have an increasing understanding of mindset and how things interact within it, with experiences leading to decisions that have far reaching implications. Though, few are able to actually release the things that are causing them issues in life and business. Emotional release and belief change can be challenging, however, they are achievable things though. Either through learning the right personal development techniques, or having the right coaching help.

I hit a huge turn around in life thanks to a course I signed up to. I totally reassessed my life, and let go of so much. Though, letting go is an ongoing thing. There are always things happening in life. So being able to let go, to release so you can be yourself, and be in harmony with yourself and life, is crucial.

At times this means allowing yourself to walk away and start again. Honoring yourself in this way can pave the path ahead which enables a smooth, efficient way to achieve incredible success. Letting go also means that rather than splitting your energy between suppressing negative emotions and working around limiting beliefs. You can flow totally in support of the success you are seeking, with a high degree of ease.

3. Get The Best Coaching And Mentoring Possible

Going at it alone can make for awesome success stories but it does increase your level of challenge. Getting help, getting experts who can impart the best knowledge and coach you into using it in the most effective way, provides a level of opportunity which is beyond measure in terms of the value it can yield.

For sure, sometimes finding your own way of doing things can be good. There are certain times where having someone, or a supportive group assembled to actually help you achieve success in a focused way, is really worthwhile. Why spend ten years achieving something when you could do it in six months with the right help? For a lot of people, pride is what blocks this from happening. Wanting to be seen as the best, and ultimate authority, able to achieve success on their own without help.

Yet, when you look at those who are ultra successful, their success came from getting the best help, and being open to it. While Tony Robbins is widely regarded as a huge authority on personal development, he had training, coaching and mentors. He developed a lot of things himself, though he also had a lot of help in the early years too. Every expert has had coaching and mentoring to help them. Many continue on, getting coaching and mentoring to help them consistently achieve success with new goals and dreams.

“A mentor is someone who sees more talent and ability within you, than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.” – Bob Proctor

Success Depends On Loving Who You Are And The Life You Are Living

All of this comes together under one heading, loving the life you are living. When you are, success flows easily. Anything less, things are out of balance, causing stress and restricting your ability to succeed. So flow with these success foundations as best you can. Commit to being your true self, let go of the past and the things which are unsupportive, and get the best coaching and mentoring you can, to really power yourself forward into success and the way you wish to be in life.

3 Strategies Any Entrepreneur Can Use to Rise Above Self-Doubt and Stay Wickedly Confident

You have just created the most epic post that will hit your ideal client and trigger them to reach out to you. But before you hit post, your mind goes down the valley of negativity. Bringing up every worst-case scenario possible and instead of hitting post, you walk away. That is one of the many ways self-doubt is killing your motivation and confidence in your own abilities every single day. Not only you but thousands of entrepreneurs around the world.

Here are 3 battle tested strategies that will help any entrepreneur stay motivated and confident no matter the situation:

1. Normalize self-doubt

Doubting yourself and your abilities don’t go away when you reach a certain level. It will always be there. A rapidly fast way to shift out of it is to understand it is a normal part of entrepreneurship. When you get into your head, you start to create this illusion of the problem being bigger than what it is. By the time you are done, you are crippled and frozen with anxiety.

I remember my 1st jump out of a perfectly good aircraft in the military. All night I couldn’t sleep and woke up in a cold sweat just thinking about it. With just 2 weeks of training under my belt, it came time to jump out and I did it. As I landed and looked around, I saw everyone just laughing and smiling about their experience. Since that 1st jump, it is has become a normal thought and pattern to just jump out of airplanes.

As you stand by the door of your perfectly safe aircraft with a parachute on your back and another reserve chute on your front, I guarantee all your worst thoughts of jumping out will leave you when you finally jump out.

2. Go ahead brag on yourself

This is a powerful yet simple task that can be used over and over again. Self-doubt causes us to forget just how amazing you are and all the accomplishments you have achieved. Take a piece of paper and list out all your accomplishments. No matter how small or big it is, write it down.

When self-doubt starts to creep back in, pull out that list and start to remind yourself who you are and all the accomplishments you have had. This one thing alone keeps me from falling into the valley of negativity. I keep a list of accomplishments in my wallet and in my journal that I revisit frequently.

“If you’re struggling with self-doubt, remind yourself of all the times you overcame what you did not know.” – Brendon Burchard

3. Get into the right environment

Being in an environment that forces you to rise up is more powerful than anything in the known world. When you are consistently around others that are raising the bar for themselves and attacking life fearlessly, you will naturally start to do the same.

You may be intimidated at first but hang around them long enough and you will be forced to naturally rise above any limit self-doubt places on you. Self-doubt can’t grow where the environment is built to produce action. Many great leaders like Jim Rohn, Les Brown, Dr. Myles Munroe, and Tony Robbins have said you are the average of your 5-7 friends. Within the right environment, self-doubt cannot grow because your environment will breed motivation and confidence in you consistently.

You can and will overcome self-doubt. Implement these battle-tested strategies immediately. Watch your battle with self-doubt become easier and you become more motivated and more confident in your abilities like never before.
