6 Steps to Power Up Your Performance With More Balance and Fulfillment

Do you ever feel like one area of your life is off track and your performance in another area drops? Maybe you’ve been going through challenging times in your relationship which is affecting your results at work or you’re stressed, overwhelmed and burnt out at your job which is manifesting in your health.

The reason why coaching to the whole person is important, rather than just focusing on one area of life, is that creating balance and deep fulfillment in all areas is the key to increasing overall performance. As one of my clients was going through a very challenging divorce for example, he started having difficulties with his performance at work.

When he was able to build resilience and navigate his divorce in a different way, it allowed him to eliminate the distractions in his head to focus and get back on top of his game at work which resulted in meeting his quarterly targets and managing his team more effectively.

Here are 6 steps to creating more fulfillment and balance in order to power up your performance:

Step 1: Take Inventory of your life

Where are you standing right now in each area of your life? Consider career, money and health as well as social and intimate relationships, personal growth, fun and enjoyment and physical environment. Rate each area based on how satisfied you are on a scale from 1 to 10. This shows you exactly where you’re off balance and what other areas might be affected by it.

“Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Step 2: Discover what’s needed

What would it take for you to be more fulfilled and balanced? What has to be different in each area for you to be completely satisfied, to rate it as a 10? Get into detail and be bold. What would the ideal scenario for you look like?

Step 3: What will you make a priority?

Often times imbalance shows up in multiple areas of life. That’s completely natural and only gives us more opportunity to increase well-being and fulfillment. In order to avoid overwhelm with all the things that you might want to change, it’s important to prioritize. What we think is the priority is not always what TRULY is the priority. What’s the first step you choose to take towards more fulfillment? Pick one to two areas and start there.

Step 4: Set yourself up for success

Determine what works best for you. After you discover WHAT you want to change, determine the best approach for HOW you can accomplish that goal. There are many different ways and supporting structures. Get clear about how you work best and most efficiently.

Step 5: Determine your blocks

Knowing yourself well is not only beneficial when building on your strengths, but also in knowing where you might get stuck. Establish what challenges might come your way when moving forward and find solutions for them beforehand. This not only saves time and energy but also helps with tackling your obstacles with more confidence.

“It’s OK to not be OK, as long as you don’t stay that way.”

Step 6: Hold yourself accountable

Increasing your levels of fulfillment and creating more balance in your life and work is certainly an indirect way of powering up your performance. Not being able to see immediate results might lead to prioritizing other duties and procrastination. Holding yourself accountable to following through with what you decided on, always focusing on the bigger purpose and the advantages is therefore crucial for your success. Find an accountability partner, a coach to help you with achieving your goals, or determine how you’ll reward yourself after completing your mission.

Change is the only constant and often times it’s uncomfortable. As humans we tend to feel safe in what we’re familiar with and even when change means getting to a better place, it can be hard to hold ourselves accountable. Make a plan to stay on track and review your goals and process regularly.

It can be very beneficial to partner up with someone in the process of creating more balance and fulfillment in your life. Staying on top of your game is an inside job, something that can not only transform the quality of your life and your relationships but also your performance at work.

How I Built Nike: Phil Knight’s 4 Business Lessons for Young Entrepreneurs

Everybody knows what Nike is, but not so many know how it was built or who built it. Phil Knight, the once-young entrepreneur who left his lucrative accounting job to pursue his dream of having his own shoe company is the man behind Nike. I was lucky enough to read Knight`s autobiography “Shoe Dog,” and today I`m going to share the top business lessons that I believe every entrepreneur should follow to succeed.

Here are 4 business lessons I learned from Phil Knight:

1. Mix what you like with what the market needs

I recently watched an interview between multimillionaire Tom Bilyeu and the internet celebrity, and former monk, Jay Shetty and I caught this quote, “the entrepreneurial success is to ask: What are you good at, what do you like, what the market needs and how to make money off it.” All the big guys in the business world – Jobs, Buffet, Gates…etc, have used the same principle time and time again, and when I read Shoe Dog, I saw that he did the same thing.

Knight was good at running,  wanted to be an entrepreneur, and saw a gap in the market. America needed better running shoes so he went to Japan, made a deal with one of their top shoe companies and became their West-coast distributor. Problems later emerged but he had already known his calling and his Oregon-based company “Blue Ribbon” became the one we now call “Nike.”

“Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.” – Phil Knight

2. Team up with better people

One of the smartest moves Knight made in his life was teaming up with his coach, Bill Bowerman. Who better to approach about selling running shoes than your well-known track coach who has ties to every shoe store in Portland?

Also, Bowerman wasn`t just a good track instructor, he was also a great businessman with a great personality. He was an alpha leader, a great networker and above all, Bowerman had a thing for running shoes. He used to sneak into his players` lockers, steal their footwear and hand them back with some minor modifications that made them run better and faster.

Bowerman`s skills had bigger demand later on when both Blue Ribbon and Onitsuka Tiger drifted apart. Now that he and Knight had to manufacture their shoes, it was Bowerman`s technique of molding rubber soles with a waffle iron that they used for making the first generation of Nike shoes, and America loved it.

3. Have a 100% conviction you’ll win

Passion and conviction are the salt and pepper of every successful business. Without a firm belief in your ideas, you won’t be able to sell them to both customers and investors.

The first question Knight received when pitching the CEO of the Japanese shoe manufacturer Onitsuka Tiger was, “Mr. Knight, what company are you with?” A difficult question to answer especially when you don’t have a company and still live with your parents. But Knight had a conviction that America needed better running shoes.

Knight had seen it before when the Japanese cameras invaded the markets back home, and he knew people would do the same with imported running shoes. Due to this, his entire pitch was all about passion and possibility which was enough to sign the partnership papers with them.

“Dream audaciously, have the courage to fail forward, act with urgency.” – Phil Knight

4. Don’t sell…show

When he was young, Knight tried selling encyclopedias door-to-door and failed miserably. He saw no need for selling them, they were heavy to carry, and because it felt like a burden to Knight, nobody bought from him.

Years later, he had to repeat the same cycle but this time with shoes. Blue Ribbon was still not conspicuous, and he had to meet with every store owner in the Pacific Northwest to get them to try his new shoes. Again, everyone Knight met said the same thing: “The world doesn`t need another track shoe.”

He had to find another way. Phil Knight came up with a new idea, instead of pitching his shoes, he attended as many track meets and races as possible and asked the runners, coaches, and fans to wear them and see if his shoes were better than their Adidas shoes; the market`s number 1 brand at the time. And guess what? They loved it and all of a sudden, Knight was all booked.

Successful people understand that you must love what you sell – or at least believe it has value. The more passion you have the better your sales numbers will be. Now that you’ve read Phil Knight`s top lessons, I want you to leave a comment with the number-1 lesson you’ve learned in business either from books or, preferably, from your experience. It`ll be more than interesting hearing from you.

Which one of these business lessons will you begin incorporating? Let us know which one and why in the comments below!

“Busy” Is The Worst Answer You Can Ever Give.

“Busy” is the answer a loser gives. The only thing I feel when people say this to me is pity. It’s a damn shame that we allow such a simple word to screw up our life and guarantee we will never achieve anything meaningful.

People are throwing the busy word around way too much. It’s meaning has become lost.

Busy is not a badge of honor either. It’s a joke.

When people drop the busy word, I think of that horrible Shania Twain song “That don’t impress me much Oh-oo-oh.”

Do you want to sound like a bad 90’s song? Of course not.

Why “busy” is the worst answer you can give.

It’s quite simple: when you say you’re busy you’re really saying to the person you’re directing it to that they’re not important – you’re pretty much making them feel like dirt.

Consider people’s feelings before you use the word busy because it’s not that far away from telling people to “F off mate!” which is what you’re really saying.

Tell the truth.

Often the word busy is an excuse or a lie. Tell the truth instead. People will respect you much more for it.

“Being faced with an opportunity that means nothing to you is okay. Tell the requester the real reason and cheer for them on the sidelines instead”

Also, be quick about it. Don’t tell people your life story or hit them with one of those automatic reply’s that has 1000 words in it and makes you sound like a total ass who is in love with themselves.

Just respond with a couple of sentences and be quick, as well as nice about it.

End of story. Thanks for playing.

Busy sounds cool. Busy is your ego talking.

That’s why people use the word. If you’re not busy, then you must not be cool or doing anything meaningful. “Why aren’t you stressed and doing Yoga” many busy people often think quietly to themselves.

My approach is a lot different. I think if you’re busy and stressed then you’re heading nowhere fast. Busy often means that the quality of your work is crap.

Busy means you are a jack of all trades master of none.

Doing lots of stuff, without focus will translate into zero time. Zero time equals busy.

My question to all the busy people is this: If you’re so busy and have zero time, what are you going to do when the opportunity of a lifetime comes by?

In reality, that’s often what happens. A great opportunity comes knocking at your door – often in disguise – and you say no because you are busy. Stupid.

Busy is a lack of discipline.

There’s that ugly mofo word again. It’s in almost every one of my blog posts. Busy is a choice that comes from someone who lacks discipline. Discipline is doing less so you can eventually experience fulfillment.

Resisting the temptation to say yes to every cold email, every Facebook message, every podcast request, every opportunity to speak in front of an audience, etc. is hard. It takes courage and guts to avoid loading up your calendar with stuff you’ll regret later, that brings you no joy.

Diet takes discipline; the gym takes discipline; business takes discipline; success takes discipline.

Wake up! Rise up!

“Embrace the art of discipline so you can avoid the mirage of busy”

Saying no takes discipline and it stops the busy train wreck.

The answer to all of this busyness talk is the word “no.”

No equals more time.
No equals focus.
No is the antidote to busy.

Say no and follow these rules:

– Be respectful
– Explain why and be honest
– Do so swiftly and don’t drag it out
– Don’t complain about it later like a sook

This advice seems harsh and that’s because it is. The trap of busy is easy to fall into and unless I explain it in harsh terms, you’ll probably dismiss it and go back to being busy. That would be a fail.

Busy means you are not present.

To translate that into psychological terms, being busy is not living in the moment which means you’re living in the future, or the past or both. The past can make you depressed and the future can make you anxious. Both these outcomes are very common with people that consider themselves busy.

“Once you throw the busy excuse in the bin, you start to find yourself living in the moment more. You have space. You have time. You can do cool stuff. You can high five if that’s your thing (it might be mine – just putting it out there)”

Confessions of a former busy person.

This advice about being busy sounds spot on, doesn’t it? You know why?

I’ll tell you why: you’re hearing the advice from someone who was the ultimate example of busyness. There were days when I didn’t even have time for a piss I was so busy. I said yes to everything and was paranoid about what people thought of me.

It was this paranoia that drove me to the madness that is busy.

I thought every yes was an opportunity and I didn’t let gut feelings or the way I felt, influence my decision-making ability. Often, I’d say yes and then feel like crap shortly after.

All of the busyness got me nowhere. I became burnt out, pissed off, negative and unproductive.

I thought busyness was being productive and that it would lead to some form of success. It was all a lie. Fast forward five years and I now have empty space, and time to do meaningful work. Win.

You have to stop being so busy. It’s messing with your ability achieve your goals.

Ask Yourself These 3 Questions to Determine Your Life’s Potential

Worldview, it’s one of the biggest buzzwords of the twenty-first century. But what does it mean and how does it help us? Worldview is our set of beliefs about the nature of reality. It is an internal doctrine that answers the biggest questions of life and guides our responses in specific circumstances.

The late Leo Apostel of the University of Brussels gave a framework of worldview that consists of several key components. These are some of the biggest of life’s questions.  A person’s responses to these questions will determine how they interact with their world and therefore establish how much impact they will have.

Here are three of the most critical worldview questions which also determine your potential:

1. What is the nature of life?

This is the most fundamental of the worldview questions. It seeks to define our place in this wonderfully complex and expansive cosmos we live in. At one end of the spectrum, a person’s worldview could be that life is fragmentary, isolated, random, and meaningless. This is a prolific view academically but can be uninspiring.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, another person’s worldview might say that all of life is ordered and filled with purpose. This is readily observable in nature and proven by science. Systems of every kind, from ecosystems to all of the systems of the human body, demonstrate order and purpose.

The impact of this particular worldview is staggering—if the universe around us is structured and purposeful then, by default, so are we. How we view our world in this manner empowers us to live with purpose, dignity, and inspiration. It frees us to reach our greatest potential in life.

“Consciously and unconsciously, intentionally and involuntarily, willfully and unsuspectingly, our beliefs are the sum total of our lives. It’s that simple.” –  Patty Houser

2. Where are we going?

This defining question of worldview has two major aspects. The first is our expectation. Based on where we, as humanity have been, and what we believe about our world, what do we expect to accomplish? In other words, it answers some of the following questions:

  • Is the future a hopeful place?
  • What good things does it have in store for us?
  • How much can I personally contribute to that future?

With a healthy expectation, we look longingly to the future in earnest hope for humanity’s highest potential.

The second is vision. If expectation is about where we believe we are headed, vision is about where we intend to go. With a compelling vision of the future, the greatest leaders in history have moved countless souls to create lasting and significant change. A healthy worldview believes the future has a place for us and that we can impact it. Truly, what we believe about—and intend—for the future can unleash tremendous possibility for us.

“I have a dream that ONE DAY this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

3. What do I believe?

This question regards our values, the things we hold dear to us and that mold our concept of right versus wrong. The promotion and protection of values are some of the most motivating forces in humanity through the ages. Consider the greatest wars, revolts, and movements of history, they were founded on passionate positions regarding values.

Values lead to conviction and conviction is what provides the “fight” in life. A true understanding of our values, or what we stand for, provides an urgency that conquers the common ailment of complacency. By having a clear picture of what you believe in, you can find the internal motivation to push forward through the adversity of life and make a significant difference in the world.

The Answer Is This: Give It Away For Free.

I have no payment walls on my website.
You can message me for free 24/7.
There is no 30-day course with a one-time special offer.

My eBook is free. You don’t even need to leave your email address.

That last one is important and I want to highlight it. Many people give away a free eBook to capture email addresses and subscribers. I’d like to do that too but in the end, I don’t want to force or trick people to do it.

My web developer asked me an interesting question the other day:

“Tim, do you want to make your free eBook signup form require a valid email address?”

My answer: “No way man.”

“Give the eBook to them even if they give a fake email. In fact, give them the eBook even if they enter no email address and give me nothing.”

The most common question I get.

I get this series of questions all the time and they are almost all saying the same thing.

“How do I increase the revenue of my business?”
“How do I build a following?”
“How do I connect with people who have influence?”
“How do I be successful?”

My answer always starts with this: give it all away for free.

None of those questions can be answered unless you do something, do it well, and start off by giving it away for free.

“Once people respect you and you’re adding value to the world, then you can easily monetize that in an ethical way that doesn’t compromise your values”

The problem is this: it’s all about you.

The reason people ask me these questions above is because it’s about what they want and it’s about themselves. Giving it all away for free is about doing something for someone else without expecting anything in return.

“If all you care about is yourself then success, influence, a business or whatever else you crave will never bloody happen”

Quit focusing on you. Tough love is what I do. Tough love baby.

Find a way to do something valuable and then give it away for free.

These four questions people ask me about getting what they want all start with giving it away for free. My answer is almost always going to be this.

Let’s practice the strategy one more time:

Step One: Do something valuable for someone other than yourself
Step Two: Give it away for free
Step Three: Repeat the first two steps
Step Four: You’ll get the desired result if you keep doing it

That’s the big strategy people. The way you get what you want is to give something that’s valuable away for free. It’s the seed to everything. It’s how you know what worked and what didn’t. It’s how you find your fans, followers and future customers.

Your promise of free must be genuine.

There’s a lot of BS on the internet, let’s face it.

That’s why to stand out and get what you want, you don’t just have to give people what they want, you have to be also genuine about it.

The moment you “fake it” or pretend, or be incongruent with yourself, all of your hard work comes undone. If you’re serious about following my advice, then be real and genuine about it.

Don’t mislead people.
Don’t say something you don’t mean.

If you’re not ready to go free, then stop right now.

The whole “free thang” may not be your cup of hot chocolate and I get it. If that’s the case, you’re not ready perhaps. Achieving your goals and getting what you want takes huge amounts of:

– Personal development
– Emotion
– Ability to connect with humans on a deep level

This stuff doesn’t happen overnight, so there’s a chance you’re not ready. That’s okay. Let’s not have a cry about it. Instead, practice your craft and work on yourself.

You’ll eventually get to a stage where the “give it away for free” idea makes perfect sense.

There is no shortcut.

Giving stuff away for free is also not a shortcut.

Like I’ve said a hundred times: There is no shortcut!

Whether you choose my strategy of free or not, it’s going to take a very long-time amigo to do anything that makes a huge impact. Heck, I’ve still got a very long way to go myself!

That’s why I encourage you to forget the shortcuts and focus on doing the one thing that makes you fulfilled and achieves the purpose (or insert other cliché self-improvement word to describe youe why) you have set for your life.

Again, there’s no overnight success.

Give it all away for free. Do it.
