Why The Instagram Culture Is Made Up BS

After taking a break overseas, I decided to take one final holiday from my actual holiday.

This break involved going with a large group to the hot springs and having a relaxing day in the water, soaking up the view of nature.

We got to the top of the hill where the hot spring with the best view and highest temperature was situated. Our group proceeded to enter the spa until two Queen’s of BS stole the show.

For over 45 minutes, these two Instagram Queens took photos of themselves!!! They were covered in fake tan and make-up, had very skimpy bikinis on that hid nothing, and were acting extra flirty.

What’s worse is that their parents were also in the same spa and were embarrassed. After a while, it became more than a joke to everyone that was sharing the spa with them. Then one guy whispered to me,

“They’re Instagram Influencers and so this is fundamental to their online strategy.”

Just when I thought the madness was over, I then bumped into these Instagram Queens again while walking past a man-made waterfall.

They were posing like Baywatch was looking for new bimbo’s to put in an upcoming remake of the 90’s TV show.

They were throwing their hair back, flashing too much breast, blowing kisses and god knows what else. This whole day of going to the hot springs became quite bizarre.

If taking fucking selfies in a hot tub and showing how hot you think you are is an “Online Strategy” then fucking shoot me now.

This Instagram Culture we have been cheated into thinking is important, is retarded.

I don’t care what you did on Saturday afternoon. What’s in it for me?

That’s the question you should ask yourself before you take any photo and put it on Instagram in the hope of building some meaningless following.

Your audience doesn’t care what you did on Saturday afternoon. Your audience follows you because they want value. They want to learn from what you did but they do not want to build up your ego. Your audience doesn’t want to fuel your own selfish desires.

Fake is the new black.

Instagram and social media work when it’s real and authentic. The trouble is that too many of you are using it to show your life off which is fake. The way you really build an audience is to do something that people care about. Show how much of a good human being you can be.

Bring people on a journey and entertain them. Use the medium to inspire them to follow their own dreams or live their passion.

“We’re drowning in a sea of fakeness and all of us are craving something real for breakfast”

Fake is ugly.
Fake is being incongruent with your true self which leads to unhappiness.
Fake is boring, meaningless and repetitive nonsense.

Remember what’s important to you.

This Instagram Culture warps what is important. Deep down, your family, your meaning for life, your life’s work and your need to grow is what matters – not this Instagram Culture.

You are not a joke.

These Instagram Queens I met mentioned several times that it was all a joke: it wasn’t. You are not a joke so don’t act like you are. You’re not required to do what everyone else does and post selfies all day long. Use this time to create and inspire.

Act like a joke and you’ll become a joke. The only difference is that the joke will be on you and you won’t be laughing when this river of pain hit’s you in the face. The reality of your Instagram madness will get you sooner or later.

It’s designed to suck your time.

Wonder why you haven’t created anything in the last two weeks? It’s because you’ve unconsciously pissed away your time and given it to Instagram on a plate. They’ve then sold this plate of Instagram BS to their database of advertisers and they’re having a very expensive lunch on your attention.

It’s a big joke and you need to win back your attention.

I just opened my very first direct message on Instagram last week. It’s thanks to a new feature that gives me a big red notification when I open the app. Add that notification to my WhatsApp, WeChat, Messenger, Email, Facebook, and LinkedIn direct messages and I could easily become a slave to a master I don’t even know.

Social media is here to stay but think about how you use it. Think about controlling your addiction and if you can’t, then give it up altogether.

Show your flaws.

I asked the dad of these two Instagram Queens why they take so many selfies. He said that it’s so they get the “perfect” shot. He said his daughters would go through hundreds of photos when they get home to try and find the shot that they end up posting. That shot will then have a whole bunch of filters applied to it.

What if you didn’t filter your life?
What if you showed your flaws?
What if perfect was disgusting?

I don’t believe this Instagram Culture has taught us the right way of going about our lives.

“Our flaws are beautiful and so are we as human beings”

While at the hot springs, many guys and girls had t-shirts on to cover their body. I’ve never seen so many people doing this.

It’s because we’ve become more self-conscious than ever about our bodies because we feel they are not worthy or perfect enough for Instagram. I say fuck it and that’s why I didn’t cover up and never will. I’m proud of who I am. I’m proud of where I come from and no Instagram standard is ever going to make me wear a t-shirt at the hot springs out of fear that people might judge me.

My flaws are what have defined me. The same can apply to you.

You will lie sometimes.
You will fail sometimes.
You will do stuff you regret sometimes.

You can do the impossible. You can achieve anything.

Instagram doesn’t have all the answers and it shouldn’t define our culture or make us do stuff without consciously thinking about it.

Make a stand!

Spend a whole weekend without taking a photo.
Make your life about something meaningful.
Find a way to add value to people’s lives.
Go against the trend.

When you do take a photo, forget how you look. Show us a photo of you with your hair messed up. Show us your love handles baby!

The Trouble With Life…

On the cereal box of life, we’re not told what to expect. No one tells us how good the highs can be and how bad the lows can get.

The trouble with life is…

Days can easily blend into years

As we get older, the days seem to pass like years. We become so focused on getting to some end destination that we forget where we started. No one reminds us to cherish every day and stop multiple times a day to return to the here and now.

No one reminds us to escape the past and put the future on hold even if it’s only for a few minutes. These few minutes can change everything if you do it consistently.

The trouble with life is…

Being happy is harder than we think

We’re given a myriad of options daily to find something wrong with our life. All we have to do is turn a corner and there’s an advertisement trying to convince us of some falsity.

Happiness starts from within when you decide to stop letting your external environment dictate how you feel. Shielding yourself from the stormy weather than your external environment throws at you sounds more straightforward than it is.

“If you don’t learn to find happiness, then your default human mode is to be negative and pissed off”

Happiness takes discipline and very few of us put in the work.

The trouble with life is…

We’re all addicted

Addiction comes in many forms. We like to over consume things that feel good rather than finding that good feeling in what already exists in our mind. We become addicted to streaming television shows, sex, stimulants like coffee, sugar, acting superior, useless material objects and talking down to ourselves.

What if we acknowledged our addictions and decided to fight them? What if we refused to have too much of a good thing and not to plug voids with quick addiction fixes?

The empty space – also known as the voids in our life – is exactly what we need to thrive. The empty space leaves room for new experiences.

The trouble with life is…

Many of us forget so easily.

Those brains we use to steer through life make us forget stuff.

We…..

Forget how lucky we are.

If you’re reading this article, then it probably means you have the Internet. This means you’re already lucky and have access to infinite information. Any answer you want is available to you at the touch of a button. What many of you have forgotten is that the only answers worth knowing are found inside of you and not on the Internet.

Forget that our problems are small compared to the universe.

That morning at 8:30 am when you think you’re going to be late for a meeting is small compared to the real problems of this world. Global warming, starvation, aids, cancer and the list goes on, are far more important than your little problem of being late.

Forget to say thanks.

The most basic word in the dictionary and yet it’s not used enough. Remembering to say thanks and saying it like you mean it is something too many of us forget. You should never take anything from this life without appreciating it. The word “Thanks” makes you remember that everything is a blessing.

Forget we’re loved.

At times you’ll become very selfish and only focus on your needs. You’ll tell yourself that no one cares or that nobody loves you. You forget that you’re always loved. Whether it’s the person serving you at the grocery store, or your parents, or your friends, or someone you work with, or an ex-partner; somebody on this Earth loves you. Don’t ever forget that.

The trouble with life is…

Too many of us don’t ever reach our full potential

You and I have so much potential inside of us. We can rally people together to solve any problem we want. We can acquire any skill that we feel we’re lacking. The resources we have access to are infinite yet we still feel so empty and even poor at times.

There are so many things we can do yet the trouble with life is that nobody shows us what’s possible in our lives. We have to discover that potential by consistently trying to tap into it, and building habits that support our dream.

“Everyone reading this blog post can achieve gianormous dreams yet many of you are reading this, are looking for inspiration. You may feel lost yet all you need to understand is that you have unlimited potential”

You can only access that potential with a single decision and hard work. Your potential can be reached when you decide not to give up. You can reach that potential when you take action and don’t become addicted like a heroin addict to the result or influence / fame you may get by becoming world-class.

The trouble with life is…

One decision can change it all, yet we never make it.

How many of us actually make that decision though? How many of us eventually make that decision after reminiscing about it for years?

“The actions that come from making a decision are not what’s hard; it’s deciding to cut off all your other options and tearing up your “Plan B” to follow one path”

Having nothing but a Plan A takes guts and confidence that what you’re doing is the right choice.

What I’ve learned is that the right choice is always right if you believe it is. Bad decisions are only bad when you perceive they are. There are lessons in every decision which can make a single decision seem worthwhile if nothing else.

What if you were only one decision away from achieving more than anybody on the face of this Earth has achieved? What if you had the potential to cure cancer and you didn’t? That’s why you must make that decision to change everything. You could be preventing so many of us from accessing your gift.

The trouble with life is…

Rejection feels depressing.

This whole rejection thing may not be the “No” you think it is. Rejection could, in fact, be a sign that it’s just not the right outcome for right now. Repeat after me:

“Rejection really means not right now.”

Don’t let the outcome of a decision make you feel like crap and then label it with a word like rejection which makes you feel worse. Everything is a lesson and is education if you let it be. Rejection is really nothing more than education. Education in life makes you smarter and prepares you for the real challenges.

The trouble with life is…

Horrible stuff is going to happen…sorry.

Somehow we’re shocked when tragedy strikes. The older I’ve become, the less I’ve understood this. We’re all going to experience some horrible events in our life. Life is set up to be full of pain, death, heartbreak, sickness and failure.

If you focus on this list of toxic and horrific events, then that’s what you’ll feel. When you learn to deal with each one as a fact of life, you’re able to heal better. These events will happen and the way to move forward is to heal yourself and get back on your feet.

No one said life was easy. The part we miss is that life is not easy for anyone. This horrible cocktail of events is going to happen to us all. Plan for the worst to happen and so when it does at least you’re prepared. Strengthen your mind in the following ways:

– Meditate
– Learn to deal with extreme stresses
– Practice gratitude for what you have
– Become a beautiful human being
– Build a quality network of people that can support you in these challenging times

The trouble with life is…

Life is hard for all of us. With that said, life has more sunshine and beauty than we could ever imagine. The trouble with life is nothing….life is a gift when you practice seeing it that way.

3 Effective Ways to Build a Disruptive Startup Company

You probably know of some startups in your country. Even if you know only a few things about business, you probably know how competitive all markets are. Yet some people are crazy enough to build an innovative business disrupting very competitive markets. That’s what entrepreneurs do.

Here are 3 tactics I learned reading their stories about building a disrupting startup from the ground up, personally and technically:

1. Disrupt Yourself

Entrepreneurship, at its core, is a big change, and every change—no matter its size or importance—begins inside of you. You have to initiate it. Successful people initiate proactively. Nobody can help you if you are not ambitious to change and grow.

It’s not an autonomous process. Change happens when you step out of your comfort zone, and it’s not supposed to be easy. In fact, facing uncertainty has always been the hardest part of every success story.

Therefore, to be successful, you have to disrupt yourself first. How?

Fortunately, it can be learned and practiced. According to Whitney Johnson, author and consultant, disrupting yourself involves seven steps:

  •         Taking the right risks.
  •         Playing to your distinctive strengths.
  •         Embracing constraints.
  •         Battling entitlement.
  •         Stepping back to move forward.
  •         Planning for failure.
  •         Letting your strategy emerge.

So to disrupt markets, you have to start with yourself.

“The more you seek the uncomfortable, the more you will become comfortable.” – Conor McGregor

2. Identify “Jobs to Be Done”

Finding a smart idea is another challenging aspect. Watch and research interesting markets and industries carefully. Don’t focus on products and features. Look for everything that companies in an industry are not good enough at doing—the poorly performed jobs.

Look for the real reasons behind buying a product or service.

  •         Does that product/service satisfy customers?
  •         Why don’t some people use a product/service?
  •         What don’t they like about an industry?
  •         What experience do they expect?

Answering these questions helps you know your customers’ real needs and to identify what Clayton M. Christensen, a Harvard Business School professor, calls “jobs to be done.” In other words, it helps you understand the real business you’re in.

This could be emotional or social, but it is less likely to be functional. Use your intuition. Talk to your target customers. Think about what jobs they might hire you to do for them. Pick an idea, create a business model, validate it, and run!

3. Change the customer process

The next challenge is crafting an innovative business model that accomplishes jobs for customers and solves their problems in the best way—and from a fresh perspective. To do this, you have to view the problems through the customer’s’ eyes.

Build a product that rocks and conquers the market. Then create an exceptional set of experiences along with your product/service. This will be possible by focusing not on touchpoints but on customers’ end-to-end journey.

A company’s processes should be aligned to support the journey. It may be easy to copy a business model, but it’s not easy to copy the process and customer experience, even in the most competitive markets.

“A man without a smiling face must not open a shop.” – Chinese Proverb

Remember that disrupting a market takes time. Learn to embrace the change and uncertainty that entrepreneurship entails and set yourself apart from others.

Hey, look, I get it. Every now and then, I need it to. The world can be a tough and unforgiving place. It can bring the strongest person to their knees and make them wish they never got up again. It’s fast-paced and doesn’t stop when someone falls behind. Instead, it simply leaves them there. […]

You Have To Have A Side Hustle (Like Me With My Blogging) – Here’s Why

This whole blogging thing you see me do is my side hustle.

It’s what I do when I get home from work.
It’s what I do when you’re at the pub with mates on the weekend.
It’s what I do when you’re watching House Of Cards.

Blogging is my side hustle because it’s what has transformed my life and what fills me with passion.
Blogging is my happy place and it’s how I serve the world.

Now many of you reading this have zero side hustle. You’re not passing go and collecting the $200 that comes with doing a side hustle daily. You’re missing out on everything that can come with building something for yourself.

I’m going to get to the point quickly. Here’s why you need a side hustle:

You’ll be stuck in your dead-end job forever.

Yes, what I just said is harsh. I said it because it’s true. You’ll never escape that job you hate and that pain in the ass boss that sucks all of your energy away unless you get a side hustle.

Start with what you like doing and then design a side hustle around it. Ensure that at least one action is taken every day. Then, let that momentum build into a side hustle.

Once you have momentum, the aim of the game is to let the side hustle take over from that dead-end job that makes you feel like crap.

You’ll never get to travel.

The world is such an amazing place (cliché I know).
There’s no point the world being beautiful and you hearing that cliché if you never get to enjoy it.

A side hustle is what you’ll eventually monetize so that you can work less and play more (i.e. travel).

Travel is one of the biggest regrets of those who are dying. You’ll never get to check back into planet Earth again so you may as well travel while you can.

Build that startup. Launch that website. Record that video. Or, in my case, write that blog post that inspires.

You’ll miss those family moments.

A side hustle is designed to give you time and allow you to do more of what you love. That’s what blogging does for me and the same can happen for you.

“Being consumed by a job you hate, so you can earn just enough to survive, so you can impress your boss and people you don’t care about, is the definition of failure”

I believe you can spend more time with your family. I believe you should feel inspired every day and do something that makes you happy. I believe that family is one of the few things in life that we’re destined to cherish.

Okay, that last line was a bit soppy for a bloke but who gives a rat’s – it’s true.

You’ll never get to experience the art of fulfillment.

Blogging gives me a sense of fulfillment. I feel like I have done something that matters to me and that matters to the world. If you don’t go and get a side hustle, you’ll never experience what it’s like to be fulfilled.

Being fulfilled makes you feel like the glass is always half full instead of half empty, or worse yet, looking at the glass as empty with a crack in the bottom that was caused by everyone else.

When you feel fulfilled, you find yourself wanting to do things for others. You find giving easier, you want to be a mentor, you want to perform charitable acts, and all round, life is good.

I want you to feel life is good too. That’s why I want you to get a side hustle amigo!

***Parting advice***

Oops….I nearly thought that headline read “parenting advice.” Now that would suck because I have no idea about that…haha

No one said this whole side hustle would be easy. You will need to work hard and you’ll have to take action. You may even need to do some soul searching and that’s fine too. My point is that you need to stop delaying and begin building something. The whole construction process I find is better than when you’ve built your side hustle.

It feels good to be in control and to serve others with your side hustle. I want that feeling for you too.

Go out and start your side hustle.

These 3 Warning Signs Predict Your About to Make a Big Business Mistake

“Honesty is the fastest way to prevent a mistake from turning into a failure.” James Altucher said this, the multiple bestselling author, and a man who has failed (and overcome failure) more than most. The truth is, mistakes hurt.

Whether it’s your mistake or somebody else’s, it stirs all sorts of fears and worries within you. You start to question yourself. You wonder what will happen next, and what the worst case scenario may look like. Mistakes are NOT fun, but mistakes also play an important role in your growth and success. For as Albert Einstein once said, “a person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

So assuming you don’t wish to play it safe your entire life, you must accept mistakes happen. Some mistakes are unavoidable; there to test and teach us. But what if I told you many of your mistakes were avoidable, and by looking in the right places you could spot them before they happen?

Most mistakes begin small; tiny little things that barely register in your day. But because you pretend they don’t happen, disregard them, or make poor decisions on the back of them, these little mistakes grow into big mistakes, which in turn develop into life-altering failure.

Certain mistakes are thrust upon you, and you cannot do much to avoid them. Yet many begin slowly, and by keeping your eyes open you can spot them before they happen. So if you notice any of the following, take note for a mistake may be near.

1. You Become Complacent

One of the biggest warning signs of all is when you grow complacent. You may enjoy the idea of an ‘easy life’, but the truth is you need a challenge. When it comes to growing a successful business, this is never more true. You need to remain motivated. Like a shark, you can never stop moving.

Such complacency lead to Thomas Frank’s biggest mistake of all. As he built ‘College Info Geek’ while still at university, he was always busy. Between studying, blogging, and marketing, he had little time to spare. So as his site grew, he decided to cut back on his studies and take fewer classes. This made sense, as more time spent on his business meant more chance of success. Yet with this extra unstructured time on his hands, Thomas grew complacent.

Instead of growing, his business plateaued. He didn’t feel as motivated, and it wasn’t until he got this motivation back that ‘College Info Geek’ continued its growth.

“If you look around, complacency is the great disease of your autumn years, and I work hard to prevent that.” – Nick Cave

2. You Get Stuck in your Own Head

Although you may surround yourself with people all day, this entrepreneurial roller coaster is a lonely ride. It’s easy to get stuck in your own head, as you work on your ideas, your plans, and your growth. You become so fixated on your work that you shut yourself off to the rest of the world. You become blind to opportunity, mistakes, and everything else.

Take John Corcoran, the co-founder of Rise 25, and a man who has built his career around connecting with influential people. Despite building a successful career in politics, entertainment, and the tech scene, John desired more. He started his own practice, and got to work on his own version of the American Dream.

He worked so hard that he went months without networking and creating new connections. All those relationships he had built during his successful career slipped by the wayside. He condemned himself to a lonely entrepreneurial existence, and had little to show for it.

Sure, he was busy, but did he grow? No! John got stuck in his own head, and it lead to what he described as his biggest business mistake of all. This entrepreneurial rollercoaster is lonely enough as it is, so don’t make matters worse by getting stuck in your own head.

3. You’re Surrounded By “Yes Men”

“Yes” is a dangerous word. If all you say is yes, you’re sure to drown under work, responsibility, and commitment. Yet it isn’t only when you say yes that issues arise, because when you’re surrounded by a bunch of “yes men”, mistakes are often close. Scott Oldford experienced this as he became a well known “web guy” at a young age.

During a period when most of us plucked up the courage to ask that girl or guy to the dance, Scott made large sums of money and won prestigious awards. He had everything a teenager could want, including a group of people who told him what he wanted to hear.

Scott soon lost everything he built, as he began to believe his own hype. He had to start from scratch. Today, he’s doing fine, but only after he lost track of what matters. That’s what happens when you surround yourself with “yes” — it blinds you from what you need to see and hear.

“Say no to everything, so you can say yes to the one thing.” – Richie Norton

Of course, warning signs like these won’t vanish mistakes from your life. Some are unavoidable. Some provide invaluable lessons you need to experience for yourself. But the sooner you nip these mistakes in the bud, the easier you’ll find your road to success.

I learned this from speaking to those who have been there and done it; successful folk at the top of their game. Don’t wait until you make your own mistakes. Learn from those who have been there and done it. And while you do, keep your eyes open for these three big warning signs.

4 Reasons Why You Should Quit Reading Motivational Books Today

Now, this is weird. You came here to find another source of motivation to keep going, and you’re being told that you shouldn’t. Hang on, because I have valid reasons for this, and I hope you will agree with me at least on something.

You see, motivation is a slippery topic. As we are all different individuals, what works for one person doesn’t really do the same miracle for another, and it’s pretty easy to fall into accusations of laziness from that spot.

Here are 4 reasons why you should stop reading motivational books:

1. Our mind doesn’t differentiate fiction and real life

Well, of course, not on a massive scale – though some religions and conspiracy theories suggest that we are all delusional and the real life is different. However, psychological experiments confirm that our minds can’t really tell whether the thing is actually happening or we are just watching or reading about it. This is why we get so entrenched by a fascinating movie or a good book. Generally, it’s a good thing, but it can turn on you when it comes to motivation.

It turns out for me that the more I read and visualize my success, the less motivated I feel. I get this sugary state of dreaminess and numbness, which, I guess, appears due to the fact my brain thinks that I am already there.

2. These books create a dangerous illusion

The illusion we all like to play is named “I’m doing something good with my life,” and it probably has its roots in the first point. I bet you know the feeling you get when you start eating healthier or doing sports just to drop that the next day. You will feel guilty, sure, but you still get that “I’m doing something good with my life” feeling.

This feeling is addictive, because it gives us a sense of change and improvement without the actual strain of change and improvement (because we aren’t doing much in reality).

And somehow reading articles on how to eat healthier and become more organized has the exact same impact on me – they trick me into feeling I’m doing something useful. Yes, reading is good, but I’m not doing anything that moves me towards my goal.

3. There’s nothing new to say

Okay, the Internet is the place where information is repeated over and over and over again. It is also probably an essential part of human nature, since useful information was the key to survival a long time ago. But now reading 15 articles on the same topic isn’t likely to spike your chances of success, because at least half of them will contain the exact same advice.

Do you know what to do with the time you have now? Do the actual thing you intend to work on or want to start! We are all motivation junkies, so let yourself occasionally read an article or two, and publish your favorite quote once a week. This will help you both save time and stay on the verge of your emotional state.

“The best career advice I’ve gotten is to stay focused, keep moving forward.” – Tyga

4. No one can do that for you

This is one of my personal favorites, because I am the kind of person who thinks that if you aren’t enjoying something, you shouldn’t do it. Don’t get me wrong, I have this on a scale a human being should not have – all in all, we all have things we don’t like doing, and they are unlikely to end. Raised by parents with a “you must” mindset, I once made up my mind to not do a single thing I didn’t like, and that didn’t turn out so well.

The good thing about motivational books and a motivation-friendly attitude is that you can learn a lot about yourself, your likes and dislikes. The bad thing is that it leaves the feeling that I can find just the right motivational method, and success will be easy (at least, that is true for me). Sadly – no, you can’t take the actual work out of the work by clever motivational techniques and habit-creating strategies.

Quitting the almost-compulsive reading of motivational articles is a good thing on its own, but as you probably know, you need to do something else to fill the void and make the habit stick.

Here are 3 things to do instead:

1. Take time to find your passion

Yes, this is another boring piece of advice you’ve heard a gazillion times. At least I thought so before I actually stumbled upon my passion. Do you know what you need to do? Try things, and one of them will inevitably attract your attention. What do you need to have to try things? Time. Reading motivational articles also requires time. I’ll leave you to do the math on your own.

2. Don’t stress out about moving too slowly

This is another personal favorite, because I am always not fast enough, not epic enough and not successful enough. Motivational articles, if consumed in the wrong way and in amounts I used to consume them, can do more harm than good in such case. You read how other people become successful, compare their lives to yours, and find out you are doing badly so the vicious cycle continues. In general, try not to do anything that makes you feel a twitch of doubt about yourself. This includes watching your friend’s cool vacation photos, cyber stalking your ex and crying over some girl’s Instagram photo with a thousand-roses bouquet.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – H. Jackson Brown Jr.

3. Explore other things that motivate you

Now when I feel down or useless I go to people who love me and ask them to say something nice. I often have a look at my published articles and other things I’m proud of. It can be anything from a bubble bath to talking to your significant other, as long as it gives you a boost in confidence and helps get back on track.
